Why I Choose Pink

This year during the month of October, each player can choose what form of cancer awareness they want to support on the field. I’m wearing pink to support breast cancer awareness.

Unfortunately, breast cancer is something that has affected my family first-hand. My mother-in-law passed away from breast cancer at the age of 48, after my wife graduated high school. Now my children will never know their grandmother. I see how this loss has affected my wife and I know losing a loved one to cancer affects so many of us.

Did you know

 • 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime

• Having a first-degree relative (sister, mother, daughter) with breast cancer doubles your risk of developing it.

• In women under 45, breast cancer is more common in African-American women and black women are more likely to die of breast cancer.

But there is hope. You can begin checking for breast cancer early by conducting a quick and easy monthly self-breast exam and getting mammograms as recommended by your doctor based on your age and risk factors.

This year, instead of just rocking my pink cleats, my wife and I are making a donation to Black Women For Wellness. This grassroots Los Angeles-based organization implements education, outreach and community programs that address a variety of health issues that disproportionately affect black women, including breast cancer. They also conduct research and policy advocacy focused on these health issues.

I encourage you to ask your doctor about how to screen for breast cancer or encourage the women in your life to do so. Check out the links below for more information about free mammograms and other resources.
